What Causes Protruding Veins In The Throat?

Why do the veins in the back of my throat suddenly look more visible? It’s a little red and looks irritated, but I’m feeling no pain. Yesterday it hurt a tad when I would swallow, but I woke up today and it went away. Although, I still have a bit of redness and the veins.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It looks like distended jugular veins. If you have redness but no pain, you still need to visit ER & get evaluated. These are indication of some either infection or some malfunction (cardiac tamponade, tricuspid regurgitation, superior vena cava syndrome, etc.) in the heart. You need to do all screening tests to rule out goiter or an other developing problem.
Neglect will lead to complications like weakness, arrhythmia, fatigue or memory loss and confusion. Take vitamin supplements & maintain healthy diet.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K.
