What Causes Progressively Worsening Coughing Episodes?

I had two clogged arteries back on January 26, 2011. One was the main artery going to the left side of my heart which was the main one and then after putting a stent in that one, the doctor noticed that I had another one that was also quite severe that showed to open up many of the vessels in my heart. I m 51 years old and in fairly good shape but I just started walking and jogging on a treadmill and I m finding that I can t do close to what I used to do without causing chest, neck, shoulder, and mid back pain. I have a slow normal heart beat in the 50 s to low 60 s. I used to be able to walk or jog up to 4 miles within 50 minutes. Now I m lucky to get 2 miles in 40 minutes because I have to start due to uncomfortable pain in those areas. I m concerned that there may be more problems. I am also experiencing some strange coughing episodes where I ll start coughing and it feeling like it s coming down deep in my chest. Starts out slow and then progressively gets worse to the point that I eventually cough up some yellow mucious. Not real thick like when I get bronchitis, but the cough being bad enough that I gag and THEN it goes away, so, It s not a cold. This is happening about once every two weeks. I haven t went back to my doctor because I really can t afford to pay him or the Hospital for what they have already done for me and I m just proud enough to be embarrassed to seek out help.

Hi,

A cough you have can be well due to what we call cardiac asthma. Since you have hard two cardiac interventions you are at risk for more such events. Furthermore, there is also a small risk of stenosis of placed stents. you may want to check with your cardiologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Syed Tehmid,
