What Causes Pressure Behind The Eye Post Cataract Surgery?

My husband had cataract surgery almost 6 months ago & about a week ago he got some dirt or something in his eye. After flushing it several times with water he said it felt scratched & was irritated. His eye has stayed red & irritated but suddenly has a lot of pressure behind it. He says it feels like his eyeball is about to pop out. He has an appointment with his eye doctor monday morning. Is there anything he can do to ease the pressure in his eye tonight???
