What Causes Popping Sound In Jaw And Pain Behind The Ear While Chewing Food?
I grit my teeth at night for years. I had a root canal a 2 years ago on right back molar. 2 months ago my jaw started popping intermittently and now all the time. when I eat sometimes when chewing it pops and I have pain sharp behind my ear. usually better in a.m. but gets worse as day goes on.
You have pain in the ears while chewing food associated with popping sound in the jaw. It looks like you are suffering from TMD (temporomandibular disorder). Temporomandibular joint disorder may cause a repeated clicking sound in the ear. Damage to the vestibulocochlear nerve may cause tinnitus.
Ear infections and tinnitus can also present with such symptoms. You are suggested to get clinically examined by an ENT and get treated at the earliest. Your ENT may refer you to a dentist. You can take pain relieving medicines like Acetaminophen or Combiflam, one SOS when needed after food to ease the symptoms. Take care of your dental hygiene.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
