What Causes Popping Sound From The Back Upon Sitting?

About 6 weeks ago, as I was getting up from a sitting position, I heard a loud popping sound in my back. It sounded like a bone snapping. I was able to walk and move about right after it happened. I had pain to the left of my spine, under the rib cage for about 6 weeks (pain was tolerable .. felt like a bad bruise). I looked at my back and saw two bulges on my spine ,.. looked to two bones sticking out. I am not having back pain other than when I lean on a chair ,... the bones that are protruding (mid-lower back) make it feel sore. I am 74, in good physical condition, workout every day, weight 106 lbs; however, I do have degenerative disc disease and osteoprosisis. Should I see a chiropractor?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my surgical experience, the popping sound with visible bony prominence indicates possible disruption of ligaments or stress fracture which are common in patients with osteoporosis.

You require an x-ray evaluation rather than chiropractor opinion as it may worsen the condition if the above-mentioned incidence has happened.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
