What Causes Persistent Throbbing Pain In The Jaw After Tooth Extraction?

I had a traumatic tooth extraction last week and have been on antibiotics since then. There was a lot of infection. I do not have pain in the socket but I am having continuous throbbing in the jaw underneath the extraction site. What could this be?

Thanks, Mindy

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain pain in jaw under the extraction site after a traumatic extraction can be due inflamed lymph nodes caused due to infection and lymph node swelling can take a longer time to resolve..

Secondly the pain can be due to the local anaesthesia injection that ,must have caused traumatic injury to the nerve due to piercing of the nerve with the needle..

Last cause can be infection deep in the extraction site..

Consult an Oral Surgeon and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and an x ray is a must to rule out the cause and treatment can be done accordingly..

As of now you can take higher painkillers like Tramadol or Ketorolac if pain is severe and do cool compresses over the jaw..
Take a soft diet and keep the extraction socket clean..
Do warm saline gargles..
A course of antibiotics can be taken by consulting a local physician or dentist..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
