What Causes Persistent Severe Pain In The Mouth In A Teenager?
My 13 year old son has very strong mouth pain the third day. He has no sores, no ulcers, no blisters. Nothing is visible. No swelling or redness . He's been to see his dentist and pediatrician. they have no answers. He taking motrin and Tylenol and not too much help. What to do and what is it. Thank you. Perl Wurzberger
As per your query your son have persistent severe pain in the mouth. The symptoms your mention in query are pointing towards a condition known as sore throat . This is the infection of the throat . It can be bacterial or viral . If it is viral infection then symptoms go away by their own in few days . I would suggest you to take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain and swelling , do warm saline gargles and consult ENT specialist . Doctor may order blood test , throat swab test to confirm the diagnosis and to rule out conditions like Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia . Doctor may also refer you to dentist to rule out dental infection , erupting tooth or problem like bruxism. In case of bacterial infection then doctor may prescribe antibiotics (amoxicillin) for a week . Do warm saline rinses.
Hope your concern has been resolved. Get Well Soon. Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
