What Causes Persistent Ringing In Ear Along Otitis Media With Effusion?

Hi, Before Christmas, I developed a cold. i knew I was getting sick since I was sneezing numerous times and would experience my ears getting plugged every now and then. When I flew internationally for the holidays, I felt that my left ear wouldn t pop with the pressure changes. I had some ringing sound in my ear for about 3 days but thought this was due to a combination of my cold and the flight. Since I ve been back I had some ringing that came and went, but just recently (about 2 days ago) I ve had the consistent ringing in my left year. I was told by an RN that it was fluid behind my ear drum and that it could take up to 3 months to resolve itself. I don t have any pain and it does not affect my hearing or sleep. I guess I just would like a second opinion and see if there is anything I can take or do to help my situation. Thank you.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain ringing in ears along with a history of having cold can be due to ear infection or there can also be perforation in the eardrum secondary to infection that can cause ringing..
While other causes includes inner ear infection, Meniere's Disease, side effects of medicines, high blood pressure, jaw joint problems like TMJ or TMD, allergies etc..
But in your case infection seems to be most probable cause..
I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like Otoscopy, MRI SCAN, x ray, Audiometry etc can help in diagnosis and treatment can be planned accordingly..
You can be advised to take treatment for infection and fluid accumulation behind ear drum like antibiotics, anti inflammatory painkillers and decongestant nasal drops..
Antibiotic er drops can be given..
You can also be advised tricyclic anti depressants like Amitryitiline and drugs like Alprazolam..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
