What Causes Persistent Pain In Spine After Laminectomy At L4-5?

Many years ago I had a lamanectomy on L 4 5. Since that time I have had continual spinal pain & discomfort & now it shows severe damage to the nerves surrounding the area. It is showing signs of arthritis & I feel the spine is in very bad condition. My question is how can I deal with these severe muscle cramps which awaken me or start before I go to sleep? I am taking electrolytes, but have been told by my rheumatoligist that there is a slight malfunction of the kidneys but nothing has beendone about it. I am wondering if this is causing the muscle cramps. Any suggestion for relief will be so appreciated.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You have a history of laminectomy. Persistent pain after laminectomy is commonly due to inflammation of the nerve root. Since you are having the symptoms of arthritis you are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP. You will have to go through few blood & imaging tests. Get treated at the earliest.

In the meantime you can take NSAIDS, Naproxen, one SOS when needed for relieve from pain. Avoid strenuous activities or driving a care. In case of severe loss of kidney function metabolic wastes build up to higher levels in the blood. Damage to muscles and nerves can cause muscle twitches, muscle weakness, cramps, and pain. Visit a urologist and get clinically examined. Get assessed and treated at the earliest.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
