What Causes Persistent Floaters And Light Flashes In Eye?

hello, I see many floaters for 6 months and 5 months ago in the morning I almost couldn t see from one eye, it happened to both eyes once each. Couple days ago I saw flashes at night and in the morning also. I knew it was a symptom of retinal detachment so I visited an ophthalmologist. He said that I have astigmatism but not a visual sign of retinal detachment, although he agreed about symptoms. He did ophthalmoscopy. I have an appointment in 4 month to check if there s any changes. I strongly believe it s an emergency. I m a med student so I think of lots of things. Please help.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I have read your description and understand your concern.
Eye floaters are small moving spots that appear in your field of vision. They can be annoying, but they generally don't interfere with your sight.
Most of the time people learn to live with eye floaters and ignore them. And they often become less noticeable over months to years. Only rarely some benign eye floaters become bothersome and might require treatment.
Most eye floaters are caused by age-related changes that occur as the jelly-like substance (vitreous) inside your eyes becomes more liquid.
You can move them away from your field of vision by moving your eyes by maneuver which shifts the fluid in your eyes. Looking up and down is usually more effective than looking from side to side.
If eye floaters are so dense and numerous that they affect your vision, you may require a surgical procedure called 'vitrectomy'.
Kindly consult Eye specialist in this regard for assessment and management.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
