What Causes Persistent Coughing Along With Urge To Cough?

I have a cough that has lasted about 5 weeks now! I have three cleaning jobs and I have rested and recovered from flu like symptoms over Easter. I have seen a doctor over Easter and he said my throat looked sore and I had a slight temperature but as I was feeling better I just needed to keep resting and taking paracetomol as I looked like I was over the worst. I have no phlegm just the urge to cough. I have been under stress recently with trying to keep working and looking after family and I did try acid reflux tablets for a cough once and they did help. Do you think I should suggest this. I am in two minds to give up my cleaning job if this does not work. I am 50 years old and my Sister contract breast cancer at this age and past away. I am anxious all the time about my health. I am not a smoker and I drink about 2 units a week and nothing sometimes.

Thanks for posting your query.

Your Cough could be either due to Infection of Throat or Lungs or Allergy.I presume no tests have been done for the evaluation of the cough.

We need to differentiate between these two as treatment is entirely different for both.

I would recommend you to get the following tests done and revert back .

Absolute eosinophil count, Serum IgE levels, Chest X ray PA view, Pulmonary function test and Throat swab Culture sensitivity.

Till then do salt water gargling 3-4 times a day, eat less oily food and avoid non veg food and avoid Citrus fruits.
