What Causes Persistent Abdominal Cramping With Loose Bowels?

My 10 year old son has had lower abdominal cramping just before, during and for a few minutes after his bowel movements. This has been going on for about 2.5 weeks now. He had diarrhea for about 1.5 weeks which has improved but still has the occasional loose stool but the cramping continues and he is having movements much more frequently (2-3 times per day ) compared to 3 times per week which used to be his normal. He is fine at all other times except when he has a bowel movement. He has always had tummy issues ( since he was a young child) ) and frequently complains of sore tummy after food which quickly goes away. The physician examined him and thought it was gastroenteritis but he has had no fever or other symptoms. She said his descending colon was dilated . Any ideas (
