Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a 55 year old male that is still pretty active. I had a sports related injury in January 2016 in which I fell on my right side and sustained three cracked ribs. I have healed from that but for the past month and a half have been having sudden and stabbing spasms in my right mid back. The spasms occur unexpectedly and will interrupt my breathing. X-rays have shown nothing other than some age-related arthritic changes. This is aggravating and I want to know what the cause is and what I can do to make it go away. Any help is appreciated.

What Causes Painful Spasms On The Middle Back?
Hello, The symptoms you have described are more likely to be symptoms of muscle spasm. To get relief from the pain and for quick healing: 1. Do hot formentation at the site. 2. Apply local anti-inflammatory gel 2-3 times a day. 3. Take anti-inflammatory drugs like Ibuprofen to reduce pain and local swelling or inflammation and muscle relaxant like thiocholchicoside. 4. Do not lift weight or try to do exercise that involve painful muscles. You should try local pain killer sprays. It does not seem much serious issue but pain should be controlled. There are good medicines which can be used for this purpose, your clinician would know a suitable match for you after examination. Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Take care Regards, Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
