What Causes Pain While Swallowing After Treating Sore Throat?

I have had a sore throat for 3 weeks. I have not gotten sick or a cold. It hurts when I swallow and has gotten worse over the past three weeks. It hurts to burb and swallow and has begun just hurting minimally all of the time. I am an alcoholic and am currently drinking. I am worried about esopheogul cancer. Any thoughts?
