What Causes Pain Near Kidney During Bowel Movement?

I was using the bathroom a few weeks ago and while going #2 I started pushing hard to get our of the bathroom

quick when I felt a sharp pain on my left side near my kidneys. It hurt for that day and just today I'm feeling

pain again after going to the bathroom.

Thanks for your query.
Noted the history and understood the concerns.
Forceful expulsion of the stool can lead to the following causing pain:
Muscles may get strained near the kidney area and thus cause pain.
If there is colitis, this can be a pain of spasm of colon that can linger on.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Try to move the torso one to another angle or side and if the pain is present, this is most likely to be muscular; get Ibuprofen if it suits you for the pain and swelling relief.
If the pain is of colon origin, you may need a proper treatment with Metronidazole and antispasmodic.
If there is still no relief, then go for the tests of blood, stool and urine, who knowns there can be a associated problem with the kidney on left side.
Ultrasonography and other tests like colonoscopy may be needed if there is no complete relief within a few days to get hte exact cause and get treated accordingly.
