What Causes Pain In The Neck?

yes the front form mid to lower neck hurts when I cough or swallow . thought it was from coughing fit I had Tuesday morning it started hurting Tuesday afternoon and has not let up ibuprophen has not helped at all could it be strained muscles or would you think maybe something else
