What Causes Pain In The Lower Back After An Injury?

I recently injured my back shoveling dirty. It is off to the right of my lower back. It has been 4 days and the pain is still severe without drugs. I dome times have slightly injured my back in this same area, but never this badly. Does it sound like muscle ? Is there anything other than drugs and time to help? Thanks! YYYY@YYYY

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It does sound like muscle related pain but if you are having any weakness or any abnormal sensations (tingling, sticking, burning, numbness etc) in the buttocks, genitalia or lower limbs, it may indicate that nerves are involved.

Treatment would involve: (1) rest as you indicated
(2)warm compresses applied to the area, 2 to 3 times daily would also be helpful. This can be done for 15 to 20 mins
(3)topical pain killers such as diclofenac gel
(4)oral pain killers such as cataflam, naproxen, ibuprofen

In some cases a muscle relaxant is also needed as well

I hope this helps
