What Causes Pain In The Jaw And Ear After Tooth Extraction?

Three weeks ago I had a tooth extracted do to a possible abscess and a crack in the lower part of my back molar which my general dentist could not see but thought it accounted for the pain I was having. She referred me to and oral surgeon and the tooth was extracted and an implant inserted. Initially I had some pain and mild swelling but it was controllable. After over a week of this when the pain got worse I went back to the dentist who took an x-ray and said the implant was properly inserted and gave me another prescription for antibiotics. A few days after that the side of my face where the extraction was became extremely painful and swollen. I was then put on a cortisone dose pack which initially seem to help but the pain continues as a dull throbbing pain primarily in the sight of the implant. Occasionally it also causes pain up my JAW to my ear. In the past week I seem to have reached a plateau and have daily pain that is somewhat controllable by over-the-counter medications. I don't know what to do since this degree of discomfort and pain is unacceptable and would like some feedback. By the way I have had to whether implants and they did not cause any significant problems and the pain was relieved in a few days

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that there is infection in your extraction socket that is flaring up again and again and leading to inflammation, swelling and pain..

If you already have implants laced, so the chances of implant rejection is less..

Pain relieve with medication is not a permanent solution and in case if it dos not improve then you will have to get the implant removed and first of all let the extraction socket heal completely with the help of antibiotics, painkillers and then the implant has to be placed again..

I would suggest you to see for a week more and if there is no improvement then you will have to get the implant removed and wait for the socket to heal completely..

Hope this helps..

Regards.
