What Causes Pain In The Hip Radiating To The Knee?

I have pain in my left hip and down my left leg to the knee. Difficulty sitting, left hip hurts. My husband massaged the area and that gives temporary help. Have heard of sciatica. Could it be that.. Don t really want to consider a hip replacement. Help!

Hi! I have gone through question and i understand your concern .

First i would say that Sciatica is a general description when the Sciatica nerve is irritated. Can be different condition that cause that .

I would say that according to what you describe, this condition may be caused by Piriform muscle syndrom .

This is a condition when the Piriform musce wich is a muscle of you buttock irritate cause of contraction especially after you have done heavy exsercise like cycling ,running ,squatting and other exsercise that this muscle can be irritated Inflamed muscle can pressure the sciatica nerve and cause the sciatica pain .
After you pain is getting better after the massage makes me think more about this cause of pain. The key of tretement is to treat the muscle inflamation:
Put some ice ( within 24 hours after the pain start ), massage , you can take some antimflamator drug such as Ibuprofen. Avoid heavy exscercise that irritate the muscle( Rest ) for 1-2 days .After the pain gets better you can do some exsercise to help your muscles to get more blood ,these exsercise consist of oppening your hips (Stretching the piriformis).
You dont need a hip replacement for that .

If the pain gets worse in 2 days call your local doctor for an appointment

Wish you good health !
