What Causes Pain In The Eyes?

Sudden eye pain in one eye...happened when I woke up this morning. It is tender and painful to touch a one spot at top of my eye either on my lid of eye. I cannot tell. I've tried to wash it out but not working thus far. It is difficult to close my eye to go back to sleep and also tough to fully open but I can see. I was not woken up by the pain, it happened as I opened my eye to adjust to the dark.
