What Causes Pain Behind The Breast Bone?

I have been having pains just behind my breastbone. sometimes they are really harsh and sometimes like an upset stomach. I have been taking a tums like med and it does not always work. should I be worried? I am a seventy-two old woman. thanks in advance for any help you can gie me.

It sounds like you may have inflammation in your esophagus. This can be caused by excess acid and reflux from your stomach. Sometimes esophageal spasm can cause some pretty severe pain. An infection is also possible. I would also want to be sure this has nothing to do with your heart. Coronary artery disease can be associated with episodes of pain and nausea. You are right to be concerned. I recommend you see your doctor very soon and get this evaluated. You may need an EKG and stress test to be sure it's not your heart. You may also need an endoscopy to look inside your esophagus and stomach to see if something there is causing your symptoms. Hope this answers your query.
