What Causes Pain At The Base Of The Neck?

Hi, I am experiencing pain on the base of my neck - back, left side. I have had this problem several times and have gone to the ER twice in the past couple of years. I have been treated with pain killers and the problem disappears for a long time. It is bothering me considerably now and past experience tells me the pain will increase. I just took a 50 mg Tramadol. I have been using Ben Gay, aspirin, and ice. The doctors have not really diagnosed anything. It is like a continual cramp. I cannot sleep right now and thought I would check with Web MD. I am a 73 year old male in reasonably good health. I am 5 10 and 300 pounds. I smoke a little more than a half a pack a day, and consume very little alcohol.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

It may w due to cervical spondylitis. You can consult an orthopaedician and get an MRI scan of neck to assess spondylitis. As of now, you can take analgesics like Ibuprofen or Diclofenac for pain relief.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
