What Causes Pain And Swelling In Upper And Lower Lips?

Last year I had swelling of the lips - both upper and lower. I went to my Dr and he said it was a food allergy. I was tested, but nothing came of the tests. This year, at the same time of year it is back. I have not changed what I am eating. I have a convertible and in the beginning thought it might be sun or wind burn because I was not wearing a hat or a visor. I have been wearing a visor for over a month, and last week did not put the top down on the car at all. No change - in fact woke up Friday with them the worst they have been this year. I am keeping Carmex, Blistex or a tri-biotic ointment on them at all times. I have also tried to take Benedryl, but cannot take while at work - only at nite. Do you have any suggestions? They are worse in the a.m., but today have been painful all day.

Dermatologist 's  Response
You are developing angioedema of the lips which is a deeper form of hives. it willrespond to antihistaminics. You can take a nonsedating one like fexofenadine in the morning as it will not hinder your driving and working. you can take a class i sedating antihistaminic at bed time like hydroxyzine 25 mg .please remember to avoid alcohol and other sedatives with this treatment. in addition get yourself investigated as there are other causes of angioedema apart from food allergy
