What Causes Pain And Swelling In The Knuckles?

my knuckles are swollen and I cant hold a job because they hurt so badly after a few short hours of use. My doctor is upset with me and won`t give me anything for the pain because I cancelled surgery on my torn meniscus after talking to the surgeon and he advised me that he didnt feel that the surgery was nesessary. Should I apply for disability or what should I do so that I can be able to make a living again?
