What Causes Pain And Swelling In Knee After An Injury?

I bent down on the sidewalk at night to tie my shoe and my knee must of came down on a small rock. I put alot of weight on that knee when i bent down and it hurt for a bit but didnt think anything of it, the next day my knee had swollen up just below the knee cap, it looked like i took a golfball to the knee sized lump and i had a lot of trouble bending it without it really hurting. The pain isnt as bad the next day and the day after that but the swelling is still there and its warm to the touch. I can bend my knee now too but there is some slight pain still there but its not too bad. Should i see a doctor or just keep icing it?

Hello

Thank you for trusting HCM.

Its always good to get a proper physical examination from your doctor after injuries. Good news is that the pain is subsiding and the swelling will follow.
what causes the pain and swelling is the normal body reaction towards injuries, it calls inflammatory mediators which will lead to the symptoms you just described, the knee is susceptible to injuries because of it being a weight bearing joint. taking NSAIDS might help reduce the pain and the swelling, remember always take your prescriptions under the supervision of an attending doctor, since any drug might have side effects.

stay safe, hope that helped.
