Hi,

Based on your description, it appears that you could be having infection of the nail bed called as 'Paronychia'.

It happens when the skin around the nail gets irritated or injured, following which it gets infected commonly by bacteria or rarely by fungus.

Treatment includes:
1. Hot water fomentation or soaking the affected finger in hot water 3 to 4 times a day.
2. Cleansing the area with mild antiseptic solution like Savlon.
3. Taking anti-inflammatory medication like Ibuprofen twice daily after food.

Generally, it should subside by taking above measures.

If it is pus filled and is considerably swollen, then you would need appropriate course of antibiotics and might require surgical drainage, for which you need to consult Surgeon.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ashakiran S, General & Family Physician
