What Causes Pain And Redness Around The Tip Of Big Toe?

Hi my name is Melissa and I m inquiring on behalf of my 16 year old daughter.she woke up in the middle of the night with horrible pain in her big toe. Her symptoms are redness around the tip of her big toe, her big toe being extremely swollen, she has also been limited on how much walking shes doing due to all these symptoms. My daughter Emily has been on amoxicillin 875 mg tabs for about a week due to the fact that she s been sick. Other than that Emily does not take any medications on a daily basis. She is not allergic to anything. And currently she is experiencing a very crampy menstrual period this month. If there is anything you can tell me about this unexplained, very painful big toe pain I would very much appreciate it. Thank you for your time!!!

Podiatrist 's  Response
It sounds like she may have an ingrown toenail. If this is the case, the best treatment would be antibiotics to help with infection and have the nail cut out by a podiatrist. If it is not an ingrown toenail, its difficult to say without evaluating her, it may be best for you to take her to a doctor for a thorough exam IF her toe doesn't improve.
