What Causes Pain And Bleeding From Ears After Cleaning?

Hi - my 22 year old son came to stay on Thursday night and say he thought he had an ear infection. During the night he woke me in agony and said he had pushed a cotton bud hard into his ear to try to relieve the pain and thought he had punctured his ear drum. I gave him ibroprofen and the pain wore off a little do I tok him to a Doctor near my house the next morning. I am staying in Spain at the moment. The doctor had a quick look in his ear and prescribed antibiotics and ear drops. His ear is still bleeding after 3 nights and I wonder if I shoukd take him back to Doctor. He flys back tomorrow so the flight is also a worry. He is still in a bit of pain and taking Ibuprofen, is it normal to still be weeping blood?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
It is clear that the ear drum has been punctured by trauma and has lead to infection called as 'acute otitis media'. It takes about a week to heal with treatnment.
Since your son is already on treatment with antibiotic ear drops, it should have started to heal by now.
In case he is still experiencing pain and bleeding, he might require in addition an oral dose of antibiotic course as well. Also, he needs to take Tablet. Ibuprofen 400 mg twice a day after food for 5 days.
Kindly consult ENT specialist in this regard for appropriate management.
All the best.
