What Causes Numbness In The Tongue With Tinnitus?

Yes..my daughter is a cheerleader and the last competition her tongue got numb and a ringing in her ears. Afterwards she had a bad headache. This was in July then today during practice about halfway through the same thing happened. We have talked to her doc but she said it s possibly like stage fright. She is very anxious before performances. Tonight was just part of the routine that they will be doing for state in 3 weeks so she is worried. Not sure what it could be or what we can do to figure it out.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Tinnitus is a common issue and most causes are benign and temporary. However, this lasts for a longer period then it should be evaluated.

Tinnitus can occur due to causes like a chronic ear infection, perforated eardrum, Eustachian tube dysfunction, Meniere's disease, TMJ disorders, Acoustic Neuroma etc.

Tinnitus is not a disease in itself but it is a symptom that indicates that there is some underlying illness.

I would suggest you consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like Audiometry, X-ray MRI can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly.

In case if ringing does not resolve then you can be advised medicines like Tricyclic Anti-depressant like Amitryptiline, anti-anxiety medication like Alprazolam, as well as Multivitamin supplements can be advised.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
