What Causes Numbness In The Left Heel?

Hello, I have numbness in my left heel, which started about three days ago. I am not diabetic, and did not injure my foot, also I do not have a arch, just in cause that matters. I don t recall stepping on anything or being bit by an insect. Actually, the numbness first started in the tip of my big toe about 2 weeks ago, but that has subsided, now the numbness is in my heel. When I walk on it, there is the dull feeling as if it was a blister on the bottom of my foot, but there is no swelling. I pocked that area with a sharp object just to see if there is feeling, and it is, but it s dull. What could that be and what should I do, short of going to my own Dr. Thank you in advance.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Numbness on the big toe followed by numbness in the heel can be due to a nerve being pinched. The nerve can be pinched at the level it comes out of the spine at the lower back (pinched by the disc) or it may be pinched as it goes down the leg. This is generally not dangerous and should subside in a few weeks.

On the other hand, I would recommend you to have a visit with your doctor and have a thorough physical examination, including a neurological examination. This will help rule out other neurological conditions.

I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal for further medical assistance.

Regards,
