What Causes Numbness In The Fingers And Hands?

I am a healthy 80 year-old woman with numb fingers in both hands...particularly in my thumbs. This started about a week ago. I am unable to grip objects and have lost strength in my hands. What exercises do your recommend and is there anything else I can do?
