What Causes Numbness In Lips And Tongue?

Yesterday I fell about 25 feet while on a roof. I was pushing a cart of sheet rock. The entire cart of sheet rock fell right on top of me. At first I thought that I was fine how ever after afee hours I definitely started feeling it. Now I am having numbess around my lips, the left side of my tongue is numb, and it seems like it could be spreading to my entire tongue. Any ideas on what could be causing this? How should I be treating it? Thanks for your help

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

Thanks for your query . The symptoms you describe in your query are pointing towards nerve impairment due to facial trauma. In case of facial injury the common symptoms are numbness of respective parts . In your case the probable cause of numbness is injury to trigeminal nerve ,which supply to tongue and lip as well.

Nerve impairment can happen due to various reasons like direct injury to nerve , injury due to fractured bone or compression dur to swelling . The recovery of nerve depends upon the severity of damage .

I would suggest you to consult oral surgeon for proper examination . Doctor may prescribe medicines to reduce inflammation , steroids ,and anti convulsant drugs . Doctor may also perform surgery to treat fracture and release compression.

For now you should start physical therapy and avoid eating (because you can bite your lip or tongue ).

Hope your concern has been resolved.
