What Causes Numbness In Arm After Receiving Anesthetic Injection?

I was given an injection of an anesthetic (not sure which one) in my upper arm before an I&D for an abcess on my buttock. The anesthetic was not strong enough and they ended up giving me a ketamine injection in my leg. This occurred on Friday (two and a half days ago). My problem is that my upper, outer arm has been numb ever since. It does not feel bruised nor does it hurt: it is just numb, particularly if I lift my arm up. If I lift my arm, the numbness shoots down to the crease of my arm. I am concerned that this is numbness in a nerve. Would that be a possibility or is this a normal side effect? Thanks!

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it is very much clear that you have got injury to the nerve fibres supplying sensations in that area where the injection was given and the nerve got pricked with the injection needle leading to numbness as a result of nerve injury..
Mostly these kind of nerve injuries are transient and the sensations recovery completely of the area but the time taken for it is unpredictable and can take from months to even years to recover completely..
As of now you can do warm compresses over the affected area..
Take a multivitamin pill once every day..
You should wait and watch for a few months and in case if you do not find any improvement consult a Neurophysician for proper evaluation and treatment..

Hope this information helps..
