What Causes Numbness Around The Stitch On Thumb After Injury?

I cut my thumb last week and went to urgent care to get stitches because it would not stop bleeding even with it held above my head with pressure on the laceration. I received 3 stitches and did not use my thumb at work for the next 3 days. Yesterday and today the area where I was cut hurt a lot less so I tried using my thumb a little more. The area above the cut and on the left side of it feels numb. In fact the whole bottom side of my thumb has very little feeling in it. Is this normal? Do I need to worry about nerve damage?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern..

As per your complain as you have got your thumb lacerated and stitches have been placed there is a possibility that the nerve endings in the area of the injury have got injured leading to numbness and reduced sensation in the thumb..
Even there might also be some inflammation in the site of injury and both these factors are contributing to numbness and reduced sensation..
Nothing to worry as gradually the sensations will improve to some extent as there is a possibility that due to damage to terminal nerve endings there is a reduced sensation in the thumb but some improvement will definitely occur and at times you can get back complete sensations..
As of now do alternate warm and cold compresses over the thumb and use it moderately..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards..
