What Causes Numbness And Tingling Sensation In Hand?

Good evening, i have a question about something that is going on with my hand. I am right handed and my left hand is completely numb on the outside including my pinky and ring finger, the numbness extends up thru my hand and into my wrist and arm about halfway up my forearm. If I keep my hand raised for more than 30 seconds, I get an awful tingle type sensation that builds up until it is in a sense painful and makes me nausious. When I put it down it will stop and just be numb again in about 20 seconds. This has gone on for about a week now. When I try to use that hand or it gets touched I get the same sensation as if I had it raised. Can you please tell me what is going on. I read about carpal tunnel, but this seems backwards.
