What Causes Nerve Compression In The Elbows And Wrists?

My wife is 68 years old. Over the last 6 months her abdominal wall muscles have atrophied. Then both arms were diagnosed with nerve compression in the elbows and wrists. Then neuropathy was diagnosed in both arms. Her diabetic doctor prescribed a drug to help her diabetic neuropathy pain. It helps . But then her right leg atrophied and was painful. Her orthopedic doctor x-rayed her hip and knee and they looked okay. He ordered an MRI of her back looking for anything that might be causing nerve damage. We have an appointment with her orthopedist next week for the results. We have an appointment with a neurologist in 3 weeks. My wife currently thinks that she has ALS. Is that possible/reasonable?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Long standing diabetes can cause nerve weakness and neuropathy. Other possible causes maybe carpel tunnel syndrome which can cause mechanical compression of nerves.

Consult your neurologist and he will direct you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
