General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Painful lumps on the neck may be from different reasons with an inflamed lymph node being a very common cause. She will need to have it checked and the doctor will be able to determine if it is a lymph node and if it is more than 2 cm or not. Lymph nodes larger than 2 cm may require investigations.
The doctor may also ask for an ultrasound of the neck if he is not sure of the exact nature of the lump.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
