What Causes Nausea While In Motion?

Hi! In July we took a family vaca to universal studio. Did lots of rides 3D mostly! Mid week I felt like I was on a boat. I couldn t bend forward it was making me feel off with instant nausea. This lasted until September. It went away for almost 3 weeks I felt great! Then I went to a fair walked around all day. Once I got in the car I felt off again. Like a slight nausea motion sick. I can t hike. Now reading is bothering and now driving isn t helping! Had an MRI of brain (found 5mm chiari malformation). (I don t think my symptoms are from that) Cervical MRI appeared normal. I m going to see a neurologist and a neuro ophthalmologist but why isn t this going away!?

Hi, thank you for asking Healthcare Magic.
With this presentation, I think the problem is what is called motion sickness and results form rapid changing visual fields. Treatment may include self care advice and medicines. Self care techniques may include the following:

Minimise head and body movements - If possible, choose a seat or cabin in the middle of a boat or plane because this is where you will experience the least movement. Using a pillow or a headrest may help keep your head as still as possible.
Fix your vision on a stable object - For example, look at the horizon. Do not read or play games because this may make your symptoms worse. Closing your eyes may help relieve symptoms.
Get some fresh air - If possible, open the windows or move to the top deck of a ship to get a good supply of fresh air. Avoid getting too hot.
Relax - Relax by listening to music while focusing on your breathing or carrying out a mental activity, such as counting backwards from 100.
Food and drink - Avoid eating large meals or drinking alcohol before travelling.
Stay calm - Keep calm about the journey. You may be more likely to experience motion sickness if you worry about it.

Some drugs like Hyocine (over-the-counter) can also be of use but needs to be taken before the journey.

I hope that answers your query. If you have more questions or any follow up query do not hesitate to write to us.
I wish you well
