What Causes Muscle Cramps In The Arms?

My 80 year old father complained of a cramp or Charlie horse feeling in his arm last night. Today, he has a bump where his pain was last night and the arm is bruised form the top near the crease down by the elbow. Does he need medical attention immediately? Or do you know what causes something like this?
