What Causes Mucus And Blood In Stool Of A Child?

My 4-year old just farted (normal sounding fart) then a few minutes later said she had to poop and her undies were wet. She is potty trained and has not had an accident. When we get to the potty her underwear is filled with maybe 1 tbsp mucus with what looks like blood streaks in it. She is playing and acting normally and this is the first time this has ever happened.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
It seems your kid is having bacillary dysentery. Once it starts it will take 5-7 days to completely get better. Unless the kid's having low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or green bilious vomiting. You need not worry. Antibiotics are needed here as there is blood in the motion . The best would be Cefixime. This is a prescription drug. I suggest you use zinc supplements (Z&D drops once daily for 14 days) and ORS (Each small packet mixed in 200ml of potable water and keep giving sip by sip) as hydration is very important and crucial part of treatment.

Best regards
