What Causes Memory Loss While On Celexa?

A family member started taking 10mg of Celexa 4 days ago and has been on Omeprazole 40mg for quite some time...he says he feels like he doesn t care about anything, like his emotions have went from a 10 to a 5...also, he feels he can t think straight...he is very intelligent and is now slipping and forgetting important things that he has known half his life, all among some of the other side effects. Is this normal or should he see about changing drugs?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for trusting HCM

Memory loss and confusion are due to the anti cholinergic effects of Celexa. This side effect is more pronounced in elderly. Reducing the dose or discontinuing Celexa can help. If the memory loss still persists after discontinuing Celexa, then a mental status evaluation needs to be done to rule out dementia.

Hope this answers your question
