What Causes Lower Back Pain?

I have been experiencing pain in my lower back only on the right side for some time. It is a burning stabbing pain that sort of feels like a hot poker stabbing me through from my lower right front just above my hip bone to my back, but the pain in my back covers a larger area. It is always present, always on the right side and has been getting worse over the past several months. I do not have any other symptoms that I can tell. I have had tests for gallbadder dysfunction, which were fine and I do not have Crone s from what they say. It is not a kidney infection, have had many of those over the years and this is nothing like that. I went to the Chiropractor thinking I was out of place, but not the issue. The x-ray showed nothing out of place or pinching. There is no pain or numbness down my leg. I have had IBS for years, but never experienced pain with it. It sometimes becomes worse during my monthly cycle, but is not cramps, more like additional pressure on the spot, sort of like everything compounding the issue. The pain is always present and it can be difficult to sit for periods of time without constantly moving and readjusting. Nothing works to relieve the pain. I am unable to sleep through the night without needing to get out of bed and move around. Straightening up and getting moving from sitting or lying in bed is slow due to the sharp pain. My general physician cannot seem to figure out what is wrong and how to stop the pain, but he will not take the time to listen to me. I am not a big fan of using medications and I hardly go the doctor unless I just can t stand the pain anymore, so when I do its serious. I would love to solve the problem instead of just band-aiding the symptom but do not know what type of doctor to see, GI, OB-GYN, Orthopedic.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It may be due to muscle sprain.

For pain you can take tablet acetaminophen.

Do regular physical therapy.

Apply diclofenac gel or ointment locally.

Heating pads also helps.

In case of not getting relief you may require MRI back after orthopedician consultation

Hope I have answered your query..
Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr Shyam Kale
