What Causes Low Hemoglobin Level?

my husband s doctor just called him to his office and told him his hemoglobin level is 5.5,,,and told him it is probably due to a bleed somewhere,,,and wants him to get a transfusion tomorrow. I feel this should be addressed immediately,,,what is your opinion?,,,,,he is cold,,,looks pale,,,and is very tired all the time,,,,I have been telling him to talk to his doctor about this,,,he had his regular physical and blood work earlier this week,,and they called him to the office today and this is what they told him.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Looking pale, feeling tired and cold to touch indicates that a person has low hemoglobin.

Hemoglobin levels of 5.5 g are extremely low and need urgent attention. He certainly needs few blood transfusion and iron supplementation.

Following picking up of his hemoglobin, he needs to be evaluated for the cause for a drop in his hemoglobin and needs to be treated accordingly. Kindly seek medical attention promptly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
