What Causes Low Body Temperature After A Hip Injury?

A family member just fell and broke her hip as well several ribs . The hospital also said her body temperature was 85 degrees which found more concerning than the fracture. Why does the body temperature drop to a hypothermic Ievel after a fractured? I find this very unusual. Never heard of such a thing.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello Dear. In polytrauma or trauma involving hip or other major joints there will be thermal dysregulation in the body. The body's mechanism of regulating heat fails and it will lead to hypothermia.

In this case doctors will take certain measures to increase core body temperature like- warmed IV fluids, heated and humidified oxygen, peritoneal lavage (internal "washing" of the abdominal cavity), and other measures.

Hope i have answered your question. Feel free to contact me if you have any more questions. I ll be glad to help you.
All the best
With warm regards
