What Causes Loss Of Smell And Taste?

I have taken this drug about 3 months ago and since then i cannot taste or smell could this be an allergic reaction to the medicine? I went to the Dr and he thought maybe that it was an allergy so he gave me a nasel spray called Fluticasone Propionate and some pills called Levocetirizine DHCL But it has not helped at all.

The problem you are facing is also known as ''ANOSMIA".

Anosmia means loss of sense of smell. It is usually caused by nasal condition and rarely by brain injury. Very few people are born without the sense of smell and it is called as congenital anosmia. Hyposmia is another related condition with decreased power to sense smell.

Common causes for Anosmia:-

1. Mild to moderate kind of anosmia may be caused due to cold, rhinitis, head ache, stress etc.

2. This is caused due to inflammation of the nasal mucosa, blockage of nasal passages or a destruction of temporal lobe.

3. Complete anosmia is found due to injury to the nostrils or long persisting bleeding from the nose, influence of acids or any chemical agents etc.

4. It is commonly found due to chronic meningitis and neurosyphilis , ciliopathy and primary ciliary dyskinesia.

5. It may be rarely found Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease too.

6. Anosmia is usually bilateral and in few of the cases unilateral too.

Symptoms of Anosmia:-

1. Upper respiratory tract infection (sinusitis or the common cold)
2. Nasal polyps
3. Hypothyroidism
4. Head trauma, damage to the ethmoid bone
5. Specific antibiotics
6. Fibromyalgia
7. Multiple sclerosis
8. Hypoglycaemia
9. Epilepsy
10.Smoking
11.Schizophrenia
12.Pernicious anemia
13.Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
14.Cushing’s syndrome
15.Stroke
16.Bell’s Palsy
17.Paget’s disease of bone
18.Zinc deficiency
19.Asthma or Allergy..etc are the causes of Anosmia.

Do's and Dont's in Anosmia:-

Do's:-
1. Pranayama.
2. Kapalabhati.
3. Breathing exercises.
4. Rest.
5. Regular oil application to the scalp are very essential in Anosmia.

Dont's:-
1.Taking the smell of strong perfumes.
2. Exposure to the dust and fumes, pollens, towards the substances regarding which person is allergic are to be avoided in anosmia.
3. Repeated infections are to be reduced.
4. Cold water head bath, exposure to breeze etc are to be avoided.

Line of treatment of Anosmia as per Ayurveda:-

1. Nasya treatment – Nasal medication.
2. Dhoomapana – herbal smoking.
3. Vamana – vomiting therapy.

Useful medicines used in Anosmia:-
1. Shadbindu taila for Nasya treatment.
2. Mahayogaraja guggulu:- 1-0-1 after food with luke warm water.
3. Laxminarayana rasa:- 1-0-1 after food with water.
4. Balarishtha:- 10 to 30ml with equal quantity of water.
