Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
About two weeks ago I came down with a cold, last week I lost hearing in my right ear, woke up the next day and I had no hearing in my left but I did in my right. At all times I am deaf in at least 1 sometimes both but usually just 1. Ive been coughing up this really thick yellow mucus and sometimes it has little spots that are hard like a booger. I have also been unable to take in a deep breath because it tickles my lungs like as if I am breathing in dust. Is ANY of this normal for a autumn cold. I very rarely get sick and when I do its usually just the 24 hour flu every couple years.
Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of loss of hearing after catching a cold which could be due to upper respiratory tract infection along with impaired immunity of the body leading to Eustachian Tube Dysfunction.
Need not to worry. I would suggest you do warm saline gargles and betadine gargles alternatively and avoid eating spicy and heavy food. You should consult ENT specialist for proper examination. The doctor may prescribe antibiotics along with anti-inflammatory Levocetirizine and prescribe you inhalers as well. Apply warm compresses on the ear and do valsalva maneuvers.
Hope your concern has been resolved.
Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
