What Causes Loose Stools With Mucus After Parathyroid Surgery?

I had parathyroid surgery 4 days ago. I have had some swelling and leg and foot pain. Been to ER two times. Nothing can be found. Now, after having a loose stool about 3 hours ago I have a yellow jelly like discharge from the rectum. What is causing this? I was on an antibiotic until today but told to discontinue it until I see my doctor for follow-up on Tuesday.

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history of parathyroid surgery 4 days ago, swelling and pain on leg and foot, been to ER two times, but nothing is found out. Now have loose stool about 3 hours ago with yellow jelly like discharge from the rectum. On last day of antibiotic and follow up on Tuesday.
With the history you have provided, this looks to be mucus due to colitis or due to action of antibiotic disturbing the bacterial normal flora of the colon.
I would advise you the following:
- Send the sample of stool for lab tests as it may give the reasons for the change in stool.
- Take probiotics, curd, yogurt, bananas and see the effects.
if the stool shows the infection get an appropriate antibiotic, metronidazole, activated charcoal tablets.
- Get the blood and urine tests particularly for any infection, hemoglobin, hypo-proteinemia and so on.
- Rest of the treatment as per the findings of clinical evaluation and investigations.
I find this answer helpful
