What Causes Lightheadedness After Sauna Therapy?

I was in a sauna today after about 6-7 minutes I started to feel a bit light headed, then my legs and hands started to feel slightly numb, a feeling that started at the extremes before spreading.. I left the sauna and got into the shower, for maybe 5 mins both my legs felt like they were mildly cramping and my hands were balling up to fists. My heart was beating hard and speaking was a little difficult. Any idea of the cause should I look into it further? Male, 29 years old.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The high temperatures during sauna cause the arteries of the skin to get wider and the blood pressure fall. This is the reason why after such an event you might experience the light-headedness and the legs feel unstable.
It is totally a normal reaction and there is no reason to worry about unless you get those symptoms without a clear reason (you get them even when you do not have sauna).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj,
