What Causes Leg Muscle Cramping While On Carbamazepine For Trigeminal Neuralgia?

I am currently taking carbamazepine for trigeminal neuralgia (recently diagnosed) but I am having leg muscle cramping that limits my ability to stand still for more than a couple of minutes or so before having to sit down to alleviate the pain as well as other side effects. My neurologist just recommended gabapentin as a substitute and I was wondering about the likelihood of getting its side effects.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear Greetings Regarding your symptoms of muscle spasm while on carbamazepine for Trigeminal neuralgia I am suggesting that you have developed a muscle rigidity which is on of the features of a condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome from intake of antipsychotic drug (carbamazepine in question)
In view of this thanks to the neurologist for the gabapentin prescription in order to curb the rigidity
If you feel skeptical a out its side effects of gabapentin I will suggest you see the neurologist for adequate clinical Councelling
I hope this helps Regards
