What Causes Knee Pain With A History Of An Injury?

I am currently 34 years of age. Back in 2001 I was involved in a car accident where I had broken my femor right in the middle. The surgeon who had operation on my had installed an intramedullary rod with pins in the bone. The only issues I had was pain in the knee and a few months after the surgery a followup was performed where they removed pins from the knee. Fast forward a number of years I have been getting some pain in roughly the same location that the break had been which is somewhat dull achy and can reach sharp pain. It has happened a couple times in the last few months and am not sure what the problem could be
